2011 Friend of the Stars Award

Presented to the Athens High School Football Field Renovation Project and the Eclipse Company Town General Store

The Athens High School Stadium sustained significant damage in the September 2010 tornadoes. The Athens High School Stadium renovation Project included new stadium lights. Principal Mike Meek chose lights that are designed and built by MUSCO Lighting. They do athletic lighting all over the country. They are so efficient at putting light on the field and not all over the surrounding community that they went from six poles to four lighted poles. Neighbors of the stadium will no longer have to deal with light trespass.

The Southeast Ohio Astronomical Society and the Ohio University Department of Physics and Astronomy presented the "2011 Friend of the Stars Award" to the Eclipse Company Store. The Eclipse Company Store underwent major renovations several years ago and preserved much of the look and feel of the old company store. It is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The outdoor lighting fixtures are unobtrusive and illuminate the building without sending light up into the night sky.
